How to Write in Russian Cursive: Type It, See It, Download It

Russian Cursive Alphabet: All 33 Letters, Print vs Cursive
The Russian alphabet has 33 letters, and every one of them has a print form, the one in your textbook, and a cursive form, the one people actually write. The chart shows both for every letter, capital and small.
Most capitals keep a recognisable shape. The small letters are where learners get lost, because several of them take a joined form that looks like a completely different Latin letter. Learn those first and the rest of the alphabet falls into place quickly.
To see a letter in context, type a word that contains it into the generator. Joins change the shape more than the letter itself: л and м always start with a small hook from the line, and that hook is what makes a word look Russian.
Russian Cursive Letters That Look Nothing Like Print
Cursive т is written like a Latin m, д like a looped g, и like a u, and ш as three humps that blur into и in a word like шишки. Cursive г can look like an r. These five cause most reading mistakes, so the chart and the reading section below come back to them.

Cyrillic Cursive: Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian
Cyrillic cursive is shared by several languages. Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Serbian and others write with the same joined hand, with a few extra letters each.
Ukrainian adds і, ї, є and ґ. Marck Script, the default hand here, includes all four, so a Ukrainian text renders fully joined. Bulgarian uses the standard set and renders in all four hands, with its own habit of writing some letters differently from Russian.

Russian Handwriting: How Native Speakers Really Write
Textbook cursive is the neat school model. Everyday Russian handwriting is quicker and flatter: letters lean, joins get shorter, and some shapes collapse into strokes that only make sense inside a word.
That is why a note from a Russian friend can be hard to read even when you know the alphabet. Bad Script is a good preview of that everyday hand, while Marck Script stays closer to the school model. Switching between them in the generator trains your eye for both.
Handwriting in Russian also follows a few rules print does not show: a small line over т or under ш in some hands to tell them apart from м and и, and capitals only where grammar needs them.
Is All Russian Handwriting in Cursive?
Mostly, yes. Russians are taught to write in joined cursive at school and keep writing that way as adults. Print block letters show up on forms, signs and some official documents, but a handwritten note, a letter or a school notebook is almost always in cursive.

How Do People Read Russian Cursive?
Native readers do not decode Russian cursive letter by letter. They read the shape of the whole word, which is why a word like шишки is easy for them and a wall of identical humps for you.
Learners get there fastest by reading words they already know. Type a familiar word in Marck Script, look at it next to the print version, and read it out loud. Start with words that contain т, м, и, ш and д, since those change most.
Count humps in words with и, ш and м: и has two, ш has three, м starts with a hook. After a week or two of short daily practice, most learners can read a neat note; a hurried one takes longer, for everyone.

Russian Doctor Handwriting
Russian doctor handwriting is a meme of its own: photos of prescriptions that look like a single wavy line. The reason is the same as everywhere, only more so, because fast Russian cursive is already made of similar humps.
A doctor writing quickly flattens every hump, drops the small hooks that tell м from и, and mixes in Latin abbreviations like Rp. for the prescription. The result is hard to read even for native speakers, which is why pharmacists often call the clinic to check.

A Russian cursive font only looks right if it uses the joined Russian letter forms. Many decorative script fonts have Cyrillic bolted onto a Latin design, and their т and д come out wrong.

Neat Russian Cursive: Tips for Clean Joined Letters
Neat Russian cursive comes from rhythm more than from beautiful single letters. Four habits make the biggest difference.
Keep one slant for every letter, and make the humps of и, ш and м the same width, because uneven humps are what make words unreadable. Join letters without lifting the pen where the model joins them, and use capitals only where the sentence needs one.
Practise with the tracing sheets in short sessions, then write the same sentence freehand underneath and compare it with the generated model. Seeing your line next to a clean one is the fastest way to spot which habit to fix.
