Switch between Letter and A4, and turn the red vertical margin rule on or off. The line count changes with the paper, because A4 is the taller sheet.

Wide ruled, college ruled, and narrow ruled
These three names describe one thing: how far apart the lines sit. Picking the right one matters more than anything else on the page, because paper that fights your handwriting size is paper you will not use.
Wide ruled, 8.7mm
The default ruling in primary and middle school, and the one most loose leaf paper uses. It gives 25 lines on Letter and 27 on A4. Choose it if your writing is average or large, or if you are printing for a child past the primary stage.
Also called legal ruled
Wide ruled and legal ruled are the same 8.7mm spacing under two names.
College ruled, 7.1mm
The ruling on most notebooks sold for high school and university. It fits 30 lines on Letter and 33 on A4, so you get about a fifth more writing on the same sheet. Choose it if your handwriting is small or you are taking dense notes.
Also called medium ruled
Medium ruled is the same 7.1mm spacing. Stationery makers use both terms.
Narrow ruled, 6.35mm
A quarter inch rule that fits 34 lines on Letter and 37 on A4. It suits genuinely small handwriting and long lists. If your letters touch the line above, this ruling is too tight for you.
Primary ruled paper for young writers
A child still learning letter shapes needs more than one line. Primary ruled paper gives them a top line, a dotted middle line, and a baseline, so letter height stops being guesswork.
Why the dotted midline matters
The midline shows where lowercase letters stop and where the taller letters keep going. Without it a child has no way to see that an a should be half the height of an h, which is why letter size looks uneven on plain ruled paper.
The 1 inch rule
Primary ruled paper is conventionally a 1 inch rule, which is what the primary option prints. That gives 8 lines on Letter and 9 on A4, sized so a young hand can fit a letter comfortably between the guides.
Paper made for kindergarten
If you are printing specifically for kindergarten or preschool, the kindergarten lined paper page opens with the primary ruling already set and covers the sizes used at that age.

Use wide or primary ruled. Practice needs room for the letter to be formed properly, and a tight ruling makes a learner shrink their writing before the shapes are reliable.
