What the dotted midline does
The dotted line marks the x height, which is how tall a lowercase letter should be. With it, a child can see that an a stops at the dots while an h keeps going to the top line. Without it, letter height is guesswork, which is why writing on plain ruled paper comes out uneven at this age.
Three lines, three jobs
The top line is where tall letters reach, the dotted midline is where small letters stop, and the solid baseline is what every letter sits on. Say those three things once to a child and the paper does the rest of the teaching.

Extra large for preschool
The extra large option is a taller 1.375 inch rule, 6 lines to a Letter page. Choose it for preschool or for a child whose letters still run over the lines, because a bigger band forgives less precise motor control.
Moving up to wide ruled

No margin rule at this age
The primary sheets leave the red vertical margin off on purpose. A child learning letter height does not need a second vertical line competing with the midline for attention. You can switch it on in the generator if your classroom expects it.
Nothing printed in the writing space
The ruled area is completely blank, with no letters, clip art, or borders. Anything printed in the space is one more thing for a child to write around.
